Radon from granite countertops?

An article written by the New York Times has caused a number of our clients to ask about radon in granite counter tops. The EPA's position is that there is at this point no evidence that radon from granite counter tops is a health concern. In over 10 years of testing we at, A Healthy Home, have not encountered a house that needed to have the counter tops removed to be brought to an acceptable level of radon. Also, the radon mitigation companies we work with have not experienced a problem with granite counter tops. A small percentage of the granite counter tops may exceed the EPA's radiation standard of 100 mR/year above natural background. We have begun measuring them ourselves, and will try to keep you posted on what we are finding.

5-14-09: We have measured about 50 granite counter tops, and have found only a few that are close to the EPA's 100 mR/year standard for a person standing within 12 inches of the counter top for 8 hours per day, for one year. Our best estimate is that these counter tops might raise the radon level by 1.0 pCi/L or less, in the room with the counter tops.

If you want to have your granite countertop measured for radioactivity or radon please call us. We can measure your counter top.
